Just Mikel.

Just Mikel.

Q: What first inspired you to pursue music and what does creating music mean to you?

A: MTV played a huge influence in my desire to create music..Getting ready for school in the mornings with my older siblings, they always had MTV on. I always wondered if I could do that one day and here I am. Creating music is a glimpse into my reality, a certain type of intimacy I can only share through music. Nothing is more authentic about me than my music, whether it be a love song or my fears of being sad. Creating music to me means authenticity and being vulnerable.

Q: If a time machine took you back to 1973 for 1 studio session, who would you want to get in the studio with and why?

A: Definitely one of the ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ sessions. It’s just a masterpiece. Many cars were hotboxed to that album in my high school days. Pink Floyd still remains one of my all time favorite bands. Getting in the studio with Quincy Jones at that time would be my dream too. How crisp his records still sound to this day would make anything we did together timeless.

Q: Which part of the creative process comes most naturally to you?

A: Writing definitely comes the most natural to me, I do think I should stop putting myself in situations that aren’t necessarily healthy so I have more to write about though.

Q: How did you feel the first time you performed for a group of people?

A: The first time I performed I didn’t really know what to do, it was a completely rushed performance. I still hadn’t found my sound, I was just happy to be on the bill.

Q: What was the most recent song/album/project that knocked you off your axis?

A: My song ‘Mixed Signals’. It was completely different than anything I’d done prior. I really enjoy that track, it’s heavily influenced by Gorillaz.

Q: What inspired your newest single, Jazz?

A: Just being around my girl, man. Seeing how she moves and operates; just being at coffee shops and thrifting, listening to music and traveling together. The fact that it is actually healthy for her and I to be together instead of constant toxicity. I went through a lot to get the love I deserve and so did she, ya feel me?
